Control - Image Refresh of Provisioned Desktops

Update Image Overview

Workspot Control provides features to help manage the pool(s) of provisioned Virtual Machines (VMs). This document illustrates the process to update the VMs previously provisioned in a non-persistent pool. To accomplish the update/refresh/replacement of the current VMs, a new template will be invoked.

Prerequisites

  • A new template prepared accordingly.
  • NOTE:  If the new template was "spawned" from a template utilized previously, ensure that the Workspot Desktop Agent is uninstalled and reinstalled in order to register the template with Control.

(*) Refer to the appropriate Workspot Integration and Configuration Guides for the Hyper-Platform used to provision the VMs, for template creation guidelines.

Best Practice:

  1. Keep a Golden Image without Agent
  2. Patch the Golden Image – (new Golden Image)
  3. Clone the patched Golden Image
  4. Install Agent on the Cloned Golden Image
  5. Use the VM created in step 4 as template.

Figures 4 through 6 show the options available to the Control administrator when scheduling the refresh of the VDI image. The following rules apply:

Schedule now: All VMs will be updated immediately. Users who are logged into a machine will be logged out and potentially may lose their work – not  recommended for regular use.

Schedule at: All VMs refresh image at scheduled time. Users who are logged into a machine will be logged out at the scheduled time and potentially may lose their work. Used when IT pre-announces scheduled down-time for maintenance.

On Log off: All VMs without active sessions will be updated immediately. VMs with active users will be refreshed when users log off if the user logs off before the "forced" update time. VMs not refreshed by the forced update time will be updated at that time and logged on users may potentially lose their work.

As shown below, progress steps through several stages of replacing the current image used by current VMs in the pool - Refreshing, Provisioning, Powering On, Waiting for IP, and Online.

.A successful update reflects that all VMs list the new template, a MAC address, an FQDN, and Online status.
