Azure Configuration Guide for Azure Site Recovery Migration [DRAFT]

Overview

The Azure Site Recovery (ASR) service can contribute to the business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) strategy by orchestrating the replication of Azure virtiual machines to another Azure region, on-premises physical servers and virtual machines to the Azure cloud, or to a secondary datacenter. When outages occur in your primary location, you can fail over to a secondary location to keep apps and workloads available. You can fail back to your primary location when it returns to normal operations.

The focus of this guide is how to utilize Azure's ASR to replicate . However, as of this writing (6/21/17), Azure does not support Gen 2 VMs yet. Once Gen 2 support is enabled for subscriptions, protecting a Gen 2 VM is just like protecting any other VM. Since Azure doesn’t natively support Generation 2 VMs, how is this helpful?

Azure Site Recovery (ASR) on Azure does support Gen 2, kind of! A great feature (or side-effect) of ASR is VMs are converted (in-flight) from a Gen 2 VM to a Gen 1 VM. ASR does the Virtual to Virtual conversion during replication. It should be noted that DR is possible because fail-over to Azure runs replicated VMs as Gen 1 VMs. Any fail-back to on-premise, invokes ASR to convert replicated VMs back to Gen 2 VMs that then can run on a Hyper-V or VMware host.

(*) Note: Upload bandwidth is something that must be considered when leveraging ASR for migration, replication, or doing DR, into the Azure cloud. Planning is required for the initial upload capacity. The capacity to upload changes (churn) to a Virtual Machine may also be significant. The ability to ship an initial replica on a hard drive to the Azure datacenter is the basis for conversion in-flight. ASR uploads only changes after the initial replica, but changes can still be significant and need churn consideration.
